Massimo Gatelli
Co-founder and General Manager
Mr Gatelli obtained a Master Degree in Physics at the University of Milan in 2001. From 2002 to 2004 he was responsible for the submission and the management of several co-funded national and FP5 european projects for the Laboratory of Molecular Beams and Nanocrystalline Materials (LGM) of Prof. Milani. He has also been involved in the technology transfer project "Nanotechnology as a competitive engine for small and medium enterprises", financed by the CARIPLO Foundation.
Since 2004, after Tethis' foundation, he devoted his efforts to the development of the company, at the beginning as an active partner, and by mid-2004 as Chief Executive Officer. He held this position up to the takeover of the company in summer 2005, when he became General Manager.
Dario Bandiera
Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Bandiera holds a Master Degree in Physics from the University of Milano-Bicocca. In collaboration with the Laboratory of Molecular Beams and Nanocrystalline Materials (LGM) of Prof. Milani he worked on the development of an apparatus for production and analysis of supersonic cluster beams by syncrotron radiation.
Mr. Bandiera has been a member of Tethis since its foundation. He has been in charge of the build-up and development of the company's laboratories and facilities, taking care both of the logistic and of the technical supervision. Since the beginning of his collaboration with the company, he has been involved in all the main activities of Tethis.
Since 2006, he is Chief Operative Officer and is responsible for the management of the internal resources, both human and economical.
Emanuele Barborini, PhD
Co-founder and Head of Tethis Research
After his graduation in Physics at the University of Milan in 1995, Dr. Barborini attained his Ph.D. in Physics at the same University in 2000.
During the past ten years, Emanuele Barborini has significantly advanced the supersonic cluster beam technique for the production of atomic aggregates, as is reflected in more than 60 scientific publications in national and international journals and in several international patents. While working at the Laboratory of Molecular Beams and Nanocrystalline Materials of Prof. Milani, Dr. Barborini coordinated projects concerning synthesis, characterization and development of devices for industrial applications.
Since 2005, he exploits his experience working at Tethis as leader of the research business unit. He takes care of cooperations with research institutes and major industrial partners and looks after all activities related to the integration of nanostructured materials into devices.
Roberta Carbone, PhD
Head of Biotechnology
Roberta Carbone graduated in Pharmacy at the University of Genoa in 1989 and then spent two years at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda (USA). She attained a Ph.D. in Forensic Medicine at the University of Genoa in 1994.
From 1995 till 2006, Dr. Carbone held a research position at the Experimental Oncology Laboratory of Prof. Pier Giuseppe Pelicci at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan. During this period, her main research focus was on biotechnological applications in the biomedical field. She developed in vivo phenotype analysis techniques with microinjections on cells and by confocal microscopy, studied technologies for viral transduction on primary cells and created microarray techniques for the analysis of biological phenotypes and for the identification of new pharmacological targets. Roberta Carbone is co-author of 20 publications in international journals. She regularly participates with oral presentations in national and international conferences.
Dr. Carbone joined Tethis in March 2006 and is leader of the biotechnology group, working on the development of new biomedical and biological applications of nanostructured materials.
Simone Vinati
Co-founder and Head of Tethis Systems
Mr. Vinati obtained a Master Degree in Physics from the University of Milan in 2000, designing and developing an apparatus for the synthesis of nanostructured materials by Supersonic Cluster Beam Deposition (SCBD).
Since then, he worked for the National Institute of the Physics of Matter (INFM) at Prof. Milani's Laboratory of Molecular Beams and Nanocrystalline Materials, both on basic and applied research on cluster-assembled materials; during these years, he participated to some funded project, and in particular he coordinated the technical aspects of the European Project NANOCOAT (5th Framework Program).
In 2005 he took the leadership of Tethis Systems, working on the engineering of deposition systems and in particular on the development and improvement of cluster sources.
Karsten Wegner, PhD
Senior Consultant
Dr. Wegner studied in Process Engineering at the Universities of Karlsruhe (Germany) and Cincinnati (U.S.A) and obtained his Ph.D from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. He is co-founder of the start-up company FlamePowders focusing on industrial flame synthesis of nanopowders. From 2003 till 2005 he had been CEO and Vice President of FlamePowders. He has been with Tethis since 2005, dealing with the investigation of potential markets and new products and taking care of the company's Intellectual Property.
Dr. Wegner has co-authored 18 scientific publications, two book chapters and one patent in the field of nanomaterials and was awarded the ETH medal for outstanding Ph.D. research. He has been active as a consultant in the field of nanomaterials since 2005 and is lecturer at ETH Zurich.
